Playing games on playchess.com

Answer

The chess server playchess.com offers numerous functions for the playing and watching of games. One great attraction of this server is above all the fact that it is used world-wide and therefore potential opponents for a game are on tap round the clock.  In the text which follows we introduce you to some of the basic functions which are available to you with the Windows access software.

You can find a good overview in the window Rooms under the heading Play and Watch.  In the “Main Playing Hall” you will find the greatest number of players, including many grandmasters. There is a room for Beginners and in the Café you can easily play unrated games. Finally, there is a playing room specially set up for children.

Should you wish to play rated games or to watch games by strong grandmasters, then your first port of call is the “Main Playing Hall”!

Above the main window you will find several tabs, e.g. “Info” or “Players” etc. In your day to day praxis, the tab you will activate most frequently is “Players” because that enables you to browse through the list of players who are present in the room. The tab “Info” should not be ignored either, because that is where you will find lots of details about tournaments which are being shown on the server.

Before you start a game you can with the help of “Formula” you can establish a list of those players who would like to play under the conditions you have chosen.

Alternatively and more simply, you can ignore Formula and easily find an appropriate opponent via the menu Home – Opponents.

Starting a game is easy; there are several ways to do so.

For example, in the menu bar there are options to choose from. If you choose Blitz, Bullet or Slow, then the challenge with the specified conditions is sent out to the other players in the room.

When a game is finished, you can immediately play another under the same conditions by choosing “Repeat last seek”.

Alternatively you can challenge a player from the list of players or with a a double click start a game from a challenge you yourself have received from another player.

Whenever a game has been started, the board window including notation and chess clocks will be displayed. You can modify how the individual components are displayed, e.g. by loading the 3D pieces.

After a game has been finished there are two more very interesting functions.

If a game has been particularly well played, you can either send applause to your opponent or even publish the game on the internet.

If you send applause, this information will be stored in the profile of your opponent.

Tournaments are regularly organised on the server. These can be found in the rooms which are provided for them.

If you are interested, switch to that tournament room and contact the tournament director by means of the chat function. The organiser will then help you with the formalities.
