Create position database

Answer

Question: I want to save positions from my own games in a separate position database without saving the whole game notation with it. How should I proceed? Additionally I have a related question: how do I get the FEN notation of a position so that I can use it in external programs?

Answer: let's take our Fritz 17 program as an example. The procedure under ChessBase 16 is similar. In the first step please create a new empty database.

Now load the game and navigate to the position you want to save as a pure position in the new database.

Menu START - "Copy position".

Now click on "New Game" and select "Insert Position" in the same menu.

Menu File - Save - Save as new game and select the newly created position database in the dialog. The positions will now be saved there without any further notation.

You can create a FEN notation of the current board position via the position input.

Navigate within the game notation to the position you want to pass on as FEN.

Key "S" starts the dialog for the position input.

Here you will find the entry "Copy FEN".

This copies the ascii entry (position description in text) to the Windows clipboard.

It looks like this:

r6r/pp1knppp/8/3p4/8/1P3PB1/1P5P/RN3RK1 b - - 0 19

You can save this FEN string either inside a plain text file or paste it directly via the clipboard into the programs that support this data format.
