US Championship Rd10: Setting up the final showdown

by Elshan Moradiabadi
4/9/2017 – Round ten of US championship saw a strange turn of event in both groups: in the open section Alexander Onischuk got the better of out-of-shape world junior champion Jeffery Xiong to join Akobian and Wesley So to tie for first. With a three-way tie the players will feel a lot of heat going into the last round. In the meantime, both Nazi Paikidze and Sabina Foisor lead the women’s event. Illustrated report by Elshan Moradiabadi.

Caruana and Nakamura bounced back after disastrous losses in the ninth round to sit on +1 and they still have a microscopic mathematical chance if all three leaders were to lose. This might seem as good as impossible, but remember the famous Candidates Tournament that qualified Magnus Carlsen for his first title match. In the last round, both he and Kramnik were tied for first, and both lost their last round games!

Although one of the games will be Nakamura with white against Akobian, a tall order, the other two, Onischuk and Wesley play with black against Gata Kamsky and Naroditsky respectively, which reduces the odds dramatically for Caruana and Nakamura to join the leaders.

Although he won't leave winless, Shabalov had a tough tournament

Speaking of their victories, although Caruana simply dismantled veteran Alex Shabalov in a smooth game, Naka won a furious game against Zherebukh who had a dream event until round seven and was co-leading with Wesley So.

Hell hath no fury like a... Nakamura taking out his frustration on you at the board

Jeffery Xiong will do some soul searching after his fourth loss at the US Championship

Alexander Onischuk strung together three straight wins to tie for first. Can he make it four?

With seats in the World Cup at stake and given that Jeffrey Xiong, who has already qualified for it, is on 11th place, and the “big three” should be qualified because of their rating, there is a close battle for the remaining three spots. Onischuk and Akobian have also already secured their berth. Consequently, we can expect a tight battle in the coming round because both Naroditsky and Kamsky can still be hopeful for a qualification of their own, despite their very uneven performance so far. Therefore, I will just sit back and enjoy the exciting games of the event rather than speculate for our dear readers.

The visitors have been privy to a great show throughouot, with lots of excitement and drama

Things were much crazier in the women section: The reigning champion, Nazi Paikidze, had a wild topsy-turvy game against Tatev Abrahamyan. In a game, with a much needed win at stake for both players, the two ladies handed were both gifted decisive advantages several times throughout. Nevertheless, it was Nazi Paikidze who prevailed by making the penultimate mistake!

Speaking of nail-biting course of events the other equally exciting game of the round between ‘new’ contender Sabina Foisor and four-times champion Anna Zatonskih followed a similar script as above albeit in a more dramatic fashion: Zatonskih started slow and gradually outplayed Foisor out of her over-optimistic handling of the position and achieved complete domination over the board. It seemed as if Foisor’s fairy tale run was finally at an end, but not so! In severe time pressure, which has been Anna’s main handicap over the years, Anna started to miss small tactical nuances, most notably when Sabina played the best practical move of the board 28.Nd5 which shook things up a little bit. This might have come as a bit of psychological surprise to Anna who later on blundered with 31….Nxf2?? in a winning position and thus allowed 32.Ne5! turning things around completely, after which Sabina managed to convert her colossal advantage with ease.

Sabina Foisor has had a true fairy tale run, arriving unprepared for the tournament, and still recovering from her mother's death

The only other player who could stay within shooting range of Nazi and Sabina was seven-time champion Irina Krush who failed to win against another experienced player in this event Katerina Nemcova. In fact, Irina should consider herself fortunate as her position was getting extremely suspicious and post-game analyses showed a clear cut win for Katerina.

Things haven't worked out for the seven-time US Women Champion Irina Krush, held to a draw in round ten by Katerina Nemcova, and pretty much quashing her hopes of a miracle finish

Tomorrow, Paikidze-Yu and Virkud-Foisor will decide the winner of this championship. Should they still be tied that it will be decided in a playoff on Monday.
