The Moth Radio Hour with Maurice Ashley

Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theaters and clubs around New York City and later around the country.

A special live edition of The Moth in Martha’s Vineyard features the first African American chess grandmaster, who details his unorthodox education and the private chess match that defines him – Maurice Ashley describes his development as a chess player under the tutelage of The Black Bear School of Chess.

Each story-teller in these Moth Radio shows must answer a very simple question: what are the three things you need to be prepared for a big night. Maurice answered the question with "a good night's sleep, a great breakfast and a cup of hot chocolate."

Maurice' story begins thus: "In the summer of 1985, when I was nineteen years old, I played one of the most important chess matches of my career. This match is not found in any history books, nor are there any living witnesses to the events that transpired that day. But this match proved to be a defining moment in my life as a chess player, teacher and commentator..." Run the broadcast and go about your work, listening to it in the background. You won't regret it.
