Rook endings for the working chessplayer

by ChessBase
7/5/2004 – Last week our Playchess.com trainer Dennis Monokroussos had every intention of examining the instructive endgame Kharlov-Nisipeanu. But the preliminaries were interesting enough to fill the lecture. Today Dennis gets to the meat and explains what really happened in the World Championship endgame.

Dennis Monokroussos writes:

The rook ending from the game Kharlov-Nisipeanu, from the ongoing FIDE Championships in Libya, was ostensibly the focus of last week’s show. However, while that ending has a deceptively simple look about it, it’s really quite complicated! To help us grasp what’s going on, we spent almost all of last week’s show examining simpler rook endings with related themes, so that this week we can conceptually break apart the ending and really know what’s happening!

I hope everyone will tune in for this week’s lesson – studying rook endings can be really interesting when we know what’s going on. And above all, knowing what to do in rook endings pays off – literally! Just remember, if Nisipeanu had watched this week’s show, he would have made at least an additional $8,000!
