This week we'll take a closer look at Ray Robson's spectacular victory against Jeffery Xiong's Petroff Defence. With the help of a sharp pawn sacrifice (a novelty!), White managed to build up a very promising attacking position.

The main point was revealed a few moves later when White followed up with a splendid rook sacrifice to expose the black king. Having missed the critical defence, Black's king couldn't get back to safety, allowing Robson to finish the game in style.

Exercise: How should White proceed?
