Round 11

SG Speyer-Schwegenheim - SV Werder Bremen 2:6

The SG Speyer-Schwegenheim is one of the teams fighting against relegation and losing 2-6 against Bremen did not improve the situation.

4 Meskovs, Nikita 0 : 1 Areshchenko, Alexander 1
5 Horvath, Adam 0 : 1 McShane, Luke J 4
6 Nemeth, Miklos 0 : 1 Efimenko, Zahar 5
7 Shytaj, Luca, Dr. 0 : 1 Hracek, Zbynek 7
8 Yankelevich, Lev 0 : 1 Spoelman, Wouter 9
9 Ruck, Robert 1 : 0 Werle, Jan 11
10 Kovacs, Gabor ½ : ½ Markgraf, Rolf-Alexander 12
12 Farmani Anosheh, Armin ½ : ½ Grigorian, Spartak 18

OSG Baden-Baden - SV Mülheim Nord 7½:½

At the start of the season the OSG Baden-Baden was clear favourite. But in round 10 they stumbled and lost their match against Solingen. After ten rounds Solingen was suddenly two points ahead. Reason enough for Baden-Baden to play rounds 11 and 12 with a really strong team: not one of the eight players had less than 2700 Elo-points. This was too much for Mülheim.

3 Vachier-Lagrave, Maxime 1 : 0 Navara, David 1
4 Anand, Viswanathan 1 : 0 Levin, Felix 6
5 Svidler, Peter 1 : 0 Feygin, Michael 7

9 Bacrot, Etienne 1 : 0 Rezasade, Amir 15
10 Naiditsch, Arkadij 1 : 0 Wagner, Leopold Franziskus 18

SV Hofheim - SG Solingen 2:6

But Baden-Baden's clear win did not help that much because Solingen also scored a clear 6-2 win against Hofheim.

1 Volokitin, Andrei ½ : ½ Van Wely, Loek 5
2 Schroeder, Jan-Christian ½ : ½ Van Kampen, Robin 7
3 Savchenko, Stanislav 0 : 1 Bok, Benjamin 8

15 Burkart, Patrick 1 : 0 Naumann, Alexander 16

SV Hockenheim - DJK Aachen 5½:2½

Hockenheim also scored a clear win - against Aachen, though Baadur Jobava surprisingly lost against Jorden van Foreest on board one.

2 Jobava, Baadur 0 : 1 van Foreest, Jorden 4
4 Ponomariov, Ruslan ½ : ½ Parligras, Mircea Emilian 6

13 Banusz, Tamas ½ : ½ Donchenko, Alexander 17

Hamburger SK - SK Schwäbisch Hall 3½:4½

Since the inception of the German League more than 20 years ago the team from Hamburg has always played in it. But this year they fight a difficult fight against relegation. The narrow defeat against Schwäbisch Hall did not help.

2 Grandelius, Nils ½ : ½ Jakovenko, Dmitry 4
3 Svane, Rasmus 0 : 1 Laznicka, Viktor 6
5 Miton, Kamil ½ : ½ Gharamian, Tigran 7
8 Ernst, Sipke ½ : ½ Postny, Evgeny 9

15 Sebastian, Dirk 1 : 0 Raykhman, Alexander 14
16 Colpe, Malte ½ : ½ Zpevak, Pavel 16

SK Norderstedt - SF Deizisau 1½:6½

Norderstedt had a very rough season this year, managing to score only one team-point from their first ten matches. Deizisau also proved to be too strong.

2 Trent, Lawrence 0 : 1 Bluebaum, Matthias 3
3 Ostrovskiy, Andrey ½ : ½ Meier, Georg 4
4 Kopylov, Michael 0 : 1 Krasenkow, Michal 5
5 Krause, Benedict 0 : 1 Heimann, Andreas 8

FC Bayern München - USV Dresden 3:5

Bavaria Munich dominates Germany's soccer league but for the chess team things are less rosy - it fights against relegation. However, Dresden was too strong.

1 Dragnev, Valentin 0 : 1 Almasi, Zoltan 2
2 Studer, Noel ½ : ½ Nisipeanu, Liviu-Dieter 3
7 Lindgren, Philip ½ : ½ Gajewski, Grzegorz 4
8 Schneider, Stefan ½ : ½ Bartel, Mateusz 5

15 Rafiee, Makan 0 : 1 Loxine, Jakov 15
16 Unzicker, Ferdinand, Dr. ½ : ½ Hoffmann, Paul 16

MSA Zugzwang - Schachfreunde Berlin 5:3

The MSA Zugzwang is the second team from Munich in the league and also faces relegation - as does the team of Schachfreunde Berlin. Therefore, "Zugzwang's" win against Berlin was very valuable.

1 Mons, Leon 1 : 0 Piorun, Kacper 1
2 Kindermann, Stefan 1 : 0 Mista, Aleksander 4
4 Hertneck, Gerald 0 : 1 Tomczak, Jacek 5
5 Zysk, Robert ½ : ½ Schneider, Ilja 7

Round 12

Round 12 must have been a relief for Baden-Baden. They had no trouble winning against the strong team of Bremen while Solingen stumbled against Hockenheim. Now, Baden-Baden and Solingen share first place again and Baden-Baden has good chances again to win another title.

SG Solingen 3-5 SV Hockenheim

5 Van Wely, Loek ½ : ½ Ponomariov, Ruslan 4

12 Markgraf, Rolf-Alexander 0 : 1 Bacrot, Etienne 9
18 Grigorian, Spartak 0 : 1 Naiditsch, Arkadij 10

Nominally, Baden-Baden was clear favourite and this showed on the lower boards where Baden-Baden scored. Naiditisch won a fine attacking game.

Mating Patterns

On this DVD, Grandmaster and worldrenowned commentator Maurice Ashley reviews some of the most interesting patterns with examples meant to educate and entertain.

Should Baden-Baden and Solingen still share the lead after 15 rounds they would have to play a tie-break. But there are still three rounds to play. Solingen plays against Aachen and the strong teams Deizisau and Schwäbisch Hall and might easily lose another one or two team-points. However, Baden-Baden still has to face Hockenheim - and might stumble again.

At the bottom of the table things remain tense: five teams fight against relegation.
