Game of the Week #606

The German Bundesliga is known as the strongest league in the world and therefore always a pleasant source of interesting games. Going through rounds 7 and 8 (they always play on weekends), the Pavlidis-McShane game really stood out and is our Game of the Week.

McShane is very hard to beat, especially in the notorious Berlin Defence, but Pavlidis played a brilliant, instructive positional game.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
