Game of the Week #599

There is some controversy about Firouzja playing some late games against much lower rated players in order to qualify for the Candidates by rating. While his games are eye-catching, we will instead focus on the Chennai Grand Masters.

Gukesh seems to have regained his equilibrium after his recent big rated loss and is leading with one round to go. His win against Sjugirov in round five was typical: a quiet start to the game and a dynamic game when the opportunity presents itself.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
