Game of the Week #598

The London Chess Classic was a highly entertaining event. English legend Michael Adams was sole first and won the tournament without a single defeat though he had to survive a lost position against Jules Moussard. Gukesh pushed hard in his attempts to qualify for the Candidates, but suffered two defeats.

Pushing even harder for a win in every single game was Mateusz Bartel, who ended up with four wins and four losses! His seventh round game against Niemann was super original and is therefore our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
