July ratings: Goryachkina vaults to world #3

Mega Database 2019 upgrade from Mega 2018 Mega Database 2019 upgrade from Mega 2018

The exclusive annotated database. Contains more than 7.6 millions games from 1560 to 2018 in the highest ChessBase quality standard. 72,000 games contain commentary from top players, with ChessBase opening classification with more than 100,000 key positions, direct access to players, tournaments, middlegame themes, endgames. July 2019 FIDE Ratings

The summer is a busy time for chess players elite and amateur alike. The Altibox Norway Chess tournament and the Women's Candidates were the highest-profile events of the month of June. Here's our whirlwind tour of the ratings news from the past four weeks or so. Let's go!

Top 100 players

Norway Chess in June did not lead to any significant changes among the top 30.

Instead of dwelling on the elite, it's worth taking note once again of what GM Igors Rausis of the Czech Republic is doing to boost his rating, as it's quite unusual. Rausis has 25 rated games posting in June across four tournaments in Italy, France and Germany:

Remarkably, Rausis is now up to number 53 in the world at 2686! He's managed to increase his rating passed the likes of Vassily Ivanchuk, and 2018 European Champion Ivan Saric, among many other notable names. How far can he go with this strategy?

Update July 5th: According to FIDE Director General Emil Sutovsky, writing on Facebook, Rausis qualified for the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament in October, but declined his invitation.

Thirty-eight of the top 100 players are rated 2700 or over (unchanged from June). To enter the Top 100 you need an Elo rating of 2654. That figure has remained surprisingly stable in recent years — in June 2018 it was 2652.

Top climbers and descenders

It was a quiet month in terms of big rating changes, aside from the aforementioned case of GM Rausis, who posted the second highest ratings gain.

Le Quang Liem won the Asian Continental Championship then followed that up with a win in the St. Louis Summer Classic A tournament this past weekend.

The forthcoming Women's World Championship match between Ju Wenjun and newly qualified challenger Aleksandra Goryachkina is shaping up to be a battle between #2 and #3 on the rating list, this highest Elo match we could hope for given that Hou Yifan has opted out of the recent Women's Championship cycles.

Top 100 Rapid

Few players were active in Rapid in June. Ding Liren moved up to #8, ahead of European Champion Vladislav Artemiev. France's Joules Moussard shot up from place 89 to 31 after a gain of 70 Elo points, largely thanks to winning the French Rapid Championship with a score of 12½/14.

We find a high degree consistency among the Junior rankings compared to a month ago. Of the top players under 21, the most (thirteen) come from India, eleven hail from Russia, eight from the USA, seven are from China and five each from Iran and Uzbekistan.

There is nothing wrong with playing with lower rated opponents. Less risk, but less gain. What makes this story a bit trickier is the infamous 400-points rule. For rating calculations effect, the maximum difference between 2 players is 400 points. So the maximum expected score is 0.92 points, and the minimum you can gain per game is 0.08x10=0.8 points.

If Rausis had played every game with guys 300-400 points lower, nothing to say. Less risk, less rewards. But some of these games are with guys even 1400 (that's 1200 points lower than his rating!) and still give them the same reward than beating a 2200. Same rewards, no risk.

I think the 400 points rule has no sense, and Rausis is just taking advantage of this flaw

@paglaman1 Anand dropped out of the top 10 for a while in 2018 (e.g. 13th in May 2018). I'm not sure about before that. I know he first entered the top 10 in July 1991, and was in top 10 all through the 1990s after that.

@PurpDriv2 - I would be delighted to have an introduction to GM Rausis. Please use the "feedback to the editors" link if you can facilitate. Nowhere have I written anything like "wrong", "dubious" or questioned the morality of the situation. I struggle to understand this reaction -- it's a purely factual account of what I'm seeing in the FIDE data. Of course I'm curious to learn more!

Very strange and unfair this comment on GM Rausis. The author should try to emulate him rather than criticizing him indirectly.

It certainly seems imoral for GM Rausis to go after lower rated opponents, at least at the first sight. And boy, how much we like shallow criticism and superficial conclusions, everything in black and white like the chessboard! But let's consider another point of view: chess economics. GM Rausis was cursed with a chess talent that took him up to the GM level. He chose to be a chess professional when nobody could predict the collapsing of the USSR (and who could?). He is on his own, with no salary, no pension paid for the years of efforts to perfect his game. In Latvia there is not much demand for chess lessons, so he moved to Czech Republic, to be closer to tournament venues and reduce travel costs. The accomodation and living costs are most probably lower in Czech Republic than in Germany, France or Italy, and as his name suggests, he can learn Czech easier since he is Russian. He is now 58 years old and future doesn't look too good for him. He has no lucrative deals with Chessbase or other publications to supplement his income. So he does what he does best: teaches chess through official games. (At ELO 2040, you can contact him, Mr. Peterson, he can teach you a trick or two to improve your game...) GM Rausis doesn't care about rating. It's his desperate cry for help!

Anyone can do what Igors Rausis is doing. There are no rules against what he is doing. Up to the others to do so, if they can / want.
May be he is exploiting a weakness in the Elo / FIDE system, if that is the case, the systems should be fixed by the responsibles.

But let's not talk as if he were doing something wrong (or dubious at least), or as if he was unworthy of his current rating.
I think he got these perfect scores for reasons.
We have seen some top players (Kasparov, Anand, ...) lose to some 2300 players during Olympiads. Facing lower oppositions doesn't mean perfect scores are always guaranteed.

@KevinC - I believe the standard is "under the age of 21 years for the duration of the current calendar year". Goryachkina will turn 21 on September 28th.

Funny, the top juniors include all under 21, but the top girls do not seem to, or Goryachkina would be number one. No? Am I missing something?
