11/14/2013 – France has kept the lead as they drew an important match against Hungary. The immediate suitors are now Azerbaijan, Greece and Georgia. In the women's section a solo leader has finally emerged. Muzychuk, Lagno and Ushenina are having a spectacular event and they helped the Ukrainian team annihilate Poland. Although there are many rounds left, it seems hard to stop them. Round five report.

You might remember that there was a similar sounding event that happened only recently, the European Club Championship, but the events are certainly different as the Club Championship allows players from outside Europe to compete while the European Team Championship is a battle between different nations. The ETCC will be held in Warsaw, Poland from November 7th - November 18th. The event is a team swiss played in 11 rounds.

A solid match that ended in four draws allows France to retain its lead. Trailing by only half a match point are Azerbaijan and somewhat surprisingly Goergia and Greece. Greece took out Belarus 3-1 while Georgia smashed a weakened Israeli team 3.5-0.5 Hungary, Ukraine, England, Russian, Romania and Armenia all have seven points and are still in contention. The Russians convincingly beat Italy after Caruana and Svidler drew in the top board while all the other Russians won.

Women's Section

Poland's shine faded a little today as Ukraine smacked them 3.5-0.5 However they are still tied for second with Georgia as Ukraine has a solid lead having won all their matches.

Armenia, Russia, Spain, Germany and Poland 3 are close to Poland and Georgia in the standings, leaving the room for medals still up for grabs to anyone, but the top prize is looking good for Ukraine, who not only has the lead but is playing excellent chess.

The Netherlands brought a secret weapon today to the game. The match ended in a 2-2 tie.

Somehow Danailov was there for both opening moves. We will leave the logistics to your imagination.

Ex World Champion Anna Ushenina (pictured) and her teammate Kateryna Lahno have an amazing 2670 and 2758 performance rating respectively, both having scored 4.5/5. Muzychuk's 3.5/4 and 2647 performance isn't too shabby either.

The Armenian team is doing quite well. Danielian has 3.0/4 and a performance rating closing in on 2600.
