Erwin l'Ami now sole leader in Reykjavik

by Johannes Fischer
3/16/2015 – The seventh round of the Open in Reykjavik was heavily contested: on the first eleven boards not a single draw way played, while seven games were won by black and four by white. One of the winners with white was Erwin l'Ami, who defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in 21 moves. With 6.5/7 L'Ami now leads the field, followed by four players with 6.0/7.

1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5 3.Nc3 exd4 4.Qxd4 Nc6 This is an interesting way of handling this d6-e5 setup. In a way White forces Black to give up the center with exd4 and in return, Black gains a tempo with Nc6 attacking the queen. So the long term trump of more space lies with White while the short term advantage of development lead is on Black's side. Let's have a look who comes out on top! 5.Qd2 g6 6.b3 This is the most common way to play. The bishop on b2 will try to nullify the powerful bishop on g7. Bg7 7.Bb2 Nf6 8.g3 0-0 9.Bg2 Re8 This is all very standard. You can see that Black has almost completed his development while the White king is still in the centre. If Black can get in the d5 break, he will cause huge problems for White. 10.Nf3 Erwin develops the knight towards the centre. 10.Nh3 Was my choice when I reached this position with the white pieces in a recent game in Al Ain Open 2014. Black could have got a huge initiative by playing Bf5 was played in the game and after 10...d5! 11.cxd5?! 11.Nxd5 Bxh3 12.Bxh3 Ne4 12...Nxd5 13.Bxg7 13.Qc2 Nd4∞ leads to crazy complications! 11...Bxh3 12.Bxh3 Nxd5 13.Nxd5 Bxb2 14.Qxb2 Qxd5 15.0-0 Qh5 And Black wins the e2 pawn. White has enough compensation to maintain the balance but there is not a trace of an advantage. 11.Nf4! White had a very pleasant position. Sagar Shah-Hojjatova Aydan, Al Ain Classic 2014, (1-0) 10...Bf5 10...Ne4 11.Nxe4 Bxb2 12.Qxb2 Rxe4 13.Ng5 Re8 14.Ne4 does cause some problems to Black. 10...d5? 11.Nxd5 Nxd5 12.Bxg7 Kxg7 13.cxd5± 11.Nh4!? The only way to try for an edge. The natural move 0-0 doesn't give White anything. 11.0-0 Ne4 12.Nxe4 Bxb2 13.Qxb2 Bxe4= Would lead to bland equality. Black has no problems because he has got rid of the key c3 knight and the f3 knight is far away from the crucial d5 square. 11...Bd7 11...Ne4?! 12.Bxe4! Bxe4 13.f3 Bf5 14.Nxf5 11...Be6 Black cannot go for d5 in any case and hence this move was not preferred by Mamedyarov. 12.0-0 d5? 13.Nxd5 Nxd5 14.Bxg7 Kxg7 15.cxd5+- 12.0-0 Qc8 The main problem that Black faces is the lack of space. He hasn't been able to make use of his lead in development and White has finally caught up. I would assess this position as being slightly more pleasant for White to play. 13.Rfe1! White maintains pieces on the board as he has more space. Bh3 14.Bh1 Qg4 True to his syle Mamedyarov goes for active play. 15.Ng2 15.Rad1 Preventing Qd4 would have been better. 15...Qd4 16.Rad1 Ne4 16...Qxd2 17.Rxd2 was relatively better. 17.Qxd4 Bxd4 17...Nxd4 18.Nxe4 Rxe4 19.Rd2! The black pieces are extremely clumsily placed. Nf4 is a huge threat. Ne6 20.Bxg7 Kxg7 21.Nf4 Rxf4 22.gxf4± 18.Rxd4! A very strong exchange sacrifice by Erwin. Nxd4 19.Nf4 Attacking the bishop on h3. Ng5?! 19...Bd7 20.Nxe4+- 19...Nxc3 20.Bxc3 g5! would have kept Black in the game. 21.Bxd4 gxf4 22.Bxb7 Rad8 22...Rab8 23.Bc6± 23.f3 23.Bc6 Bd7= 23...fxg3 24.hxg3 And White has ample compensation for the exchange and even stands better here. But Black can still hope for the half point. 20.Nxh3 Nxh3+ 21.Kf1 At first this seems like an illogical resignation. But on closer inspection, things start becoming clearer. The b7 pawn is hanging. Ne4 is threatened which attacks the d4 knight and threatens Nf6+. The two bishops are so powerful that White will inevitably emerge with a crushing advantage. 21.Kf1 Kf8 21...c6 22.Ne4 Rxe4 22...Nc2 23.Rc1 Nb4 24.Nf6+ Kf8 25.Nxh7+ Ke7 26.Bg2+- 23.Bxe4+- 22.Bxb7 Rab8 23.Bg2 Ng5 24.Nd5 c5 25.Bc1 Nge6 26.Bh6+ Ng7 27.Nf6 Re7 28.Nxh7+ Kg8 29.Nf6++- 1–0

In this position Fier attacked the a6 bishop with 15.Qa4!? Eljanov was extremely alert and chopped off the central pawn! Nxd4! 15...Bb7 16.Rd1= 16.c5!? Shrewd Defence. Unleashing the e2 bishop to attack the one on a6. What happens if White takes the bishop? 16.Qxa6 Nc2+ 17.Kf2 Nxe3 18.Kxe3 Qd4+ 19.Kf3 is easy to calculate but the difficult part is to see the next move for Black. e5‼ Simply brilliant! 19...Qe4+ 20.Kf2 Rd2 21.c5 Qxf4+ 22.Ke1 Rfd8 is also a very strong attack. 20.fxe5 20.Rhd1 Qxf4# 20...g5‼ Using the pawns in impeccable fashion to launch a mating attack. 21.g3 Qe4+ 22.Kf2 f4 23.g4 Qe3+ 24.Kf1 f3 25.Bd1 Rxd1+ 26.Rxd1 Qe2+ 27.Kg1 Qg2# 16.Bxd4 Qxd4 17.Qxa6 Qxb2 18.Rd1 Rxd1+ 19.Bxd1 Rd8 20.0-0 Qd4+ 21.Kh1 Qxd1-+ 16...Qxc5 17.Bxd4 Rxd4 17...Qxd4 18.Qxd4 Rxd4 19.Bxa6± 18.Qxa6 Now the queen is very much in the game. Rxf4 Black has won three pawns and White king is still in the centre. This is sufficient compensation for the missing piece. 19.Rf1 Re4 20.Rf2 Qe5 21.Qd3 Qxb2 Black now has four pawns for a piece and though things are not so clear yet, Eljanov went onto win the game. 0–1

This game is somehow very similar to the famous final game of Deep Blue vs Kasparov from their 1997 match in New York. The same sacrifice on e6 was played in this game too. The difference being that in the Man vs Machine games, Kasparov who was black had to resign in 19 moves where as here Stefansson who was White resigned after 18 moves! Let's have a look as to where White went wrong. 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 5.Ng5 This move is not as silly as it looks. It is not easy to dislodge this knight from g5 just as yet. e6 5...h6 6.Ne6! Qa5+ 7.Bd2 Qb6 8.Bd3 And to put it mildly, the knight on e6 is very irritating. 6.Bd3 Ngf6 7.N1f3 h6 There is no doubt that Granda Zuniga had seen this Kasparov game. In fact if you check the analysis in Mega Database, some of them have been done by him! It means that the Peruvian player had seen this line deeply and was forcing his opponent to find the best attacking moves on the board which is not so easy for an unprepared opponent. 8.Nxe6! fxe6 8...Qe7 Kasparov had played this in his game. This is what Nunn has to say about the move: "After this Black is just lost. The score in over-the-board play tells a grim story: 13/14 for White. According to current theory, Black's last attempt to survive in this line is 8. ..fxe6 9 Bg6+ Ke7 10 0-0 Qc7 11 Re1 Kd8. At the cost of losing a tempo with his king, Black avoids having his queen stuck at e7, where she blocks in the whole of Black's kingside. With the queen on c7, the bishop on f8 can move and Black has somewhat more freedom. Having said that, White's attack is still very dangerous, but it is by no means a forced win." Granda Zuniga follows Nunn's advice. 9.0-0 fxe6 10.Bg6+ Kd8 11.Bf4 b5 12.a4 Bb7 13.Re1 Nd5 14.Bg3 Kc8 15.axb5 cxb5 16.Qd3 Bc6 17.Bf5 exf5 18.Rxe7 Bxe7 19.c4 1-0 (19) Comp Deep Blue-Kasparov,G (2785) New York 1997 9.Bg6+ Ke7 White has excellent compensation. But as mentioned before Black plans Qc7 followed by Kd8 unravelling himself. 10.0-0 Qc7 11.Re1 Kd8 12.Ne5 12.Rxe6 seems to be the right way to continue. Bd6 13.Re1 Nf8 14.Bd3 Be6 15.c4 Kc8∞ 12.g3 Preparing Bf4. Bd6 13.c4 Nf8 14.Bc2 Qe7 15.Bd2 Bd7 Black seems to be doing not so bad. 12...Nxe5 13.dxe5+ Nd7 14.Bf7 Bc5! 15.Be3? Now Black has no problems. 15.Bxe6 was necessary. After Re8 16.Qg4 Nxe5 17.Bg5+ hxg5 18.Rad1+ Nd7 19.Qxg5+ Be7 20.Bf7 The position looks almost lost for Black but he has a miraculous defence with Qxh2+! 21.Kxh2 Rh8+! 22.Qh5 Rxh5+ 23.Bxh5 Bf6= And Black clings on. He is not even worse. 15...Qxe5 16.Qd2 16.Bxe6 Kc7 16...Qd6 17.Qe2 Bxe3 18.Qxe3 e5 White has not much compensation for his missing piece and decided to call it a day! A victory of defence over attack! But surely this move h6 came as a surprise to Stefansson who must not have prepared this before the game. The question is whether Granda Zuniga would want to try this against a well prepared White player! I don't think so. 0–1

Security is strict in Reykjavik - but Erwin l'Ami came out clean.

And so did Pavel Eljanov.

But the young American GM Daniel Naroditsky...

...probably had too much - or the wrong kind of - change in his pockets.

However, this did not seem to affect his concentration.
He defeated Rui Gao from China with an energetic attack.

This game is a nice example of how to punish the wastage of a move in the opening. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ Bd7 4.Bxd7+ Qxd7 5.0-0 Nc6 6.Qe2 6.c4 is much more common. 6...Nf6 7.Rd1 Rc8 8.c3 e6 This is all normal and has been seen in almost 40 games before. The obvious move should now be d4. But I wonder what happened to the Chinese player who decided to waste to convert the structure into a Maroczy Bind. 9.c4? This is just a waste of an entire tempo. g5! Gawain Jones is an agressive and ambitious player. He will not let a moves like c2-c3-c4 go unpunished. 10.d4 10.Nxg5 Nd4! 11.Qd3 Rg8 Black has an excellent position. 10...g4 11.d5 The only way to continue. Otherwise the d4 pawn was falling. gxf3 12.Qxf3 Nxd5 12...Nd4 13.Qxf6 Rg8 Was another way to play. 13.cxd5 Nd4 14.Qd3 e5 Black has a strong knight on d4 and an open g-file. The opening battle has definitely ended in his favour. 15.Be3?! 15.Nc3 was better. 15...c4! 16.Qf1 16.Qd2? Nf3+! 17.gxf3 Qh3-+ would have ended in a mate. 16...Nc2 17.Nd2 Nxa1 18.Rxa1 c3! Black has won an exchange and continues his initiative. Gawain Jones was easily able to convert this into a win. 0–1
