Blindfold and Rapid in Monaco

3/16/2004 – From March 20 to April 1st the famous Amber tournament will be staged for the thirteenth time, in the spectacular Grand Hotel in Monte Carlo. The event features world class players like Anand, Kramnik, Svidler, Shirov and Leko. They play two games per day: one rapid and one blindfold. Here are details of the participants and schedule.

The thirteenth edition of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament will take place at the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco from March 20 till April 1, 2004. Maecenas Mr. J.J. van Oosterom is the exclusive sponsor of the tournament.

The venue is the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel, 12 Avenue Des Spelugues, Monte Carlo. Admission is free. The games start every day at 1.30 p.m. and finish around 8.00 p.m. In each round the participants play one rapid chess game and one blindfold game. The speed of play is one hour of all the moves of a game.

The blindfold games they play on a computer. For the players only an empty chess board is visible on the screen. With the mouse or the keyboard they can make a move, which will then appear on the screens of both players. After they have confirmed their move, the players see the move disappear and the clock of the opponent starts running. Various monitors in the playing room show the course of the game, which is perfectly visible for the arbiter and the audience, but not for the grandmasters.
