August 2015 ratings: Ding Liren in Top Ten

by Albert Silver
8/1/2015 – After huge successes in his match against Gelfand, and in the Chinese League, Ding Liren became the second Chinese player ever to break into the Top Ten. This was bad for Levon Aronian who is now demoted to world no. 11. August also signaled a welcome return to form for Fabiano Caruana who is once more in the 2800 club. Still, don't miss the results of the amazing John Burke!

FIDE August 2015 – Top 100 Players

It was a great comeback for Fabiano who had been causing his fans to worry with his non-stop
drop in Elo after his amazing rise last year. An inauspicious start at Dortmund was interrupted
by a fantastic run of five wins, including a last round win over Nisipeanu, and now he is at 2808.

It was a little longer in the coming than expected, but the numbers (eight Chinese over 2700!)
made it clear it was only a matter of time. Ding Liren becomes the second Chinese player to break
into the Top Ten (Wang Yue was the first) after a fantastic 3-1 win over Boris Gelfand followed
by 4.0/4 in the Chinese League which included wins over Wei Yi and Vladimir Malakhov. This garnered
him 21 Elo and the no.10 spot, pushing Levon Aronian down to no.11.

A special mention deserves to be made of Igor Kovalenko, whose fantastic result at the
Najdorf Memorial took him past 2700 for the first time in his career. A special moment for
any player, and deserving of congratulations.

Top climbers and descenders

Aside from those already mentioned above, Bu Xiangzhi's superb result at the
China-Russia match in which he scored 4.0/5 for the Chinese, helped push him
past 2700 once more, and bolstered the 2700 club with an eighth Chinese player

FIDE Top 100 Women

It was a close affair, but with only one Elo over the legendary Judit Polgar, Hou Yifan's top ranking was all but made of glass. An uninspired event at Dortmund playing the elite was all it took, as she failed to convert several promising postions, and lost five Elo to allow Judit Polgar to once more claim the title of highest rated female player.

Tan Zhongyi was one of the brightest stars of the last month as she played a very
intense 29 games, winning rating from the China-Russia match, the Chinese Chess
League, and the Women World Championship zonal, which she won a full point ahead.
This took her to 2512 Elo, her personal best, though not the first time she breaks
2500. In spite of this, she is not even an IM, due to a lack of norm opportunities.

FIDE Top 100 Juniors

There is no getting around the fact that in spite of several noteworthy results, such as 14-year-old Jeffery Xiong' s 21 Elo gain to take him within nine Elo of his rival Samuel Sevian, the news that simply renders it almost unimportant is John M. Burke.

John Burke (photo by The ChessDrum)

John is a young American player, born in 2001, thus younger than Sevian even, who gained a staggering 280 Elo to leap from 2258 Elo to .... 2538 Elo in a single bound. He was not even a FIDE master yet. This places him within 15 Elo of Samuel Sevian, the hitherto owner of the US spotlight, and six Elo behind Jeffery Xiong.

Before dismissing this as just one of the oddities that crop up with the K-factor at 40, the actual results that made this rating possible need to be acknowledged. This was not achieved by playing some unknown tournament scoring massively against lower-rated players. This was achieved playing the DC International, the World Open, and the New York International (won by Gata Kamsky). In those three tournaments he faced 13 international masters, scoring 8.0/13, and five grandmasters against whom he scored 3.0/5. His performance was consistent in all three events.

Three high-profile opens, five grandmasters, and thirteen international masters. What a run
young John Burke has had!

As an aside on the Elo monster jumps seen in the last year, a few comments warrant making, since it is often hard to know what to make of these leaps. After all, most players would be carousing wildly if they gained 20 or 30 Elo in a tournament, so what to make of gains of several hundred? Can they possibly stand the test of time? Obviously some may not, but here is food for thought all the same.

A few months ago, we reported the staggering 426 Elo gain by Slovakian Jergus Pechac, who went from 2114 to 2540 in a single bound. Five months later, and three tournaments, his rating has stabilized around 2513, up from 2511 the previous month.

US girl Akshita Gorti, born in 2002, made waves when she gained 244 Elo on the June list, from 2180 to 2324 Elo, making her also the fifth highest rated female player. It must be noted that in spite of still playing under a heavy K-factor of 20, she played in both the DC International as well as the World Open, and only shed 10 Elo, though she also managed a draw against GM Alonso Zapata in the process. Another case will be recounted in the top Girls list where a young player scored her second giant gain.

FIDE Top 100 Girls

In January 2014, Mongolian player Nomin-Erdene Davaademberel, 13 years old, was rated a very modest 1834, certainly not worth noting. Sure, she had won the Asian u10 championship in 2010, but since nothing that stood out had materialized since then there was no reason to have any particular expectations at this point. After being inactive for over six months, her rating began to take off event after event and by October 2014 she was already 2107, until the Elo explosion in which she leapt from 2107 to 2314 the next months, for a 207 Elo gain. Playing every single month her rating fluctuated considerably as she gained 40 Elo in some events, lost it in others, and by June this year was at 2303. Now, after a month's rest, rethinking or regrouping, she experienced another boom and has gained 125 Elo, taking it to a very impressive 2428. This also ranks her world no.52 among all female players.

Top 100 Rapid

It was a fairly quiet month for the elite in the Rapid list. The only notable change, incremental though it was, is Boris Savchenko's rise from FIDE Rapid 2592 in April to 2696 this month, which is 129 Elo higher than his standard rating. A remarkable run.

FIDE urgently needs to undo the absurd changes to the rating system. How about treating everyone equally? I played Burke earlier this year and won very easily. He was rated in the 2200s and that was the level at which he played. He may have improved in the months since then but not by 400 points.
Chess has been utterly mismanaged in the last 30 years. From equal treatment based on merit, and respect for the game, we now have special treatment for special people (women), the undermining of the system of ratings and titles, the development of computer programs was allowed (Shogi, on the other hand, had the wisdom and ethics to take steps to prevent that from happening), and an utter failure to do anything about the resulting cheating. Chess players apathetic while self-serving politicians who are not really chess players themselves destroying the game while taking what they can. Too bad Euwe couldn't have lived forever.

I am really surprised how the players in the top list switch nationalities like the underwear.

For example Caruana who seems to have gotten a offer from the US chess federation that Italy could not raise. I am not sure ... Did he change some years ago from the US chess federation to play under the Italian flag because they made a good offer (which got now from the USA topped).

But also Naiditsch and Nisipeanu just changed their nationality in chess.

The FIDE should stop this gambling with nationalities depending on money or other rewards for the player.
Players play with nationalities depending which federation pays more? Is this really the idea to play for a Nation?

The USA bought So and Caruana (back), Nakamura is the only player that deserves to be called American.
Caruana seems to change between Italy and the USA, depending who pays more ...

I went on the FIDE's website to overconfirm that it was now official that Caruana was considered, by the FIDE, to be from the US Federation. And indeed... Already.

@Moskva You are misinformed on the changes made in the K-factor. Until July 2014 the K-factor for sub-2300 players under 18 years old was 30, not 15. They increased this to 40 as of last year, which was an increase but far from the 15 to 40 you suggest.

The young boy Burke played well.
The huge rating gain - “Oddities of K-factor” – Yes, about two-third of it. With traditional ‘K’ of 15, rating gain will be 105 points. Definitely great. But with new ‘K’ factor of 40, it became 280 points. So Mr. Silver, it will be helpful just to do the Math to give readers accurate context. Easy way to do, just take 37.5% of rating jump to adjust to old K-factor. Not boy’s fault, and he played great. But rating jump need to be put in context by you in your reviews. Btw, he played Cadet tourney, not shown in FIDE yet where he gained probably 45 points. So Burke is well ahead of all youngster prodigies at around ~2590 now, because of 40k. Move aside, Sevian, Xiong, etc., mentioned in article. Gr8 thing for 40K players is that they go up at 40k, but now come down only at 10k. FIDE made mockery of rating system with 40k. But as I said, not Burke’s fault and good luck to him.

The comment regarding Tan Zhongyi is wrong as it is not normally the Chinese policy to apply for IM titles. She has more than sufficient number of IM norms but would be waiting for her full GM title.

Wow, 2538 and untitled!

David Howell also reached the official 2700+ rating for the first time. He deserves a mention too.
