2017 Tata R3 Express: Bloody round with tough games

1/16/2017 – The third round was a very exciting round to follow, with decisive results all over, and some epic games. By far the most exciting was the battle between Wesley So and Richard Rapport. The Hungarian brought in all his imagination and verve and reached a dead won game only to blunder it away in a couple of moves. Tragic. Nepomniachtchi also tried his hardest to save a hard endgame, but slipped at the end and lost to Wei Yi. The Challengers saw all games but one end in wins. Express report.

In spite of all the big names, Pavel Eljanov has risen to the top of the interest list with his super start. In round three he was finally held to a draw by Pentala Harikrishna.

There were no pretenses by Dmitri Andreikin at anything other than to keep the wolves at bay, and an uneventful draw was the result against Magnus Carlsen.

A classy performance by Sergey Karjakin saw him beat Loek Van Wely, and join the pack at 2.0/3

By far the most exciting game of the day, Richard Rapport played beautifully to reach a totally winning position, until a couple of blunders inverted this to a dead lost situation. Tragic, and Wesley So will heave a big sigh of relief.

It was the longest game of the day in the Masters. Wei Yi nursed a nasty advantage against Ian Nepomniachtchi. They finally reached a theoretical draw, though the burden was on Black to defend. It never really came to that as the Russian blundered and lost shortly after.

What a title for this article...!? Chess means blood and violence...
Chess was never meant to be like that... Just a game... Please stop using those dirty words when talking about our noble sport, pleeeaase...!!

Only one Giri in the Challengers section this round.

What else can we say. Blunders are just part of the game. If neither blunders, neither wins the game. It's just how article reporters portray the victory or the loss that somehow dictates the way readers react. Congrats Wesley So and the entertaining Richard Rapport.
