Istanbul Besiktas continues to lead in Turkish Is Bank League

19.7.2012 - And Istanbul Teknik remains in second place. After nine rounds of play these two teams have 17 and 16 match points respectively and are followed at some distance by Ankara Gazi Üniversitesi Spor Kulübü at 13 points. With top GMs playing it is the lower boards with juniors and females that are decisively influencing the results. Big illustrated report by Anastasya Karlovich.

The Turkish Is Bank Chess League has started in Konya Rixos Hotel (Turkey) and will continue from July 10th until July 22nd, 2012. This year, near 300 players from 14 clubs are participating in this event. The Turkish Team Championship (1st Chess League) was inaugurated in 1995. In 2004, it changed its name to Super League, but after the Turkish Isbank assumed sponsorship in 2006, the name was changed once more to the Turkish Isbank Chess League.

Report after round nine

After nine rounds Istanbul Besiktas Jimnastik Club continues to lead in the Turkish Isbank League, with seventeen points. Two rounds were played on 18th of July. The toughest match in the eighth round happened among the leader Besiktas Jimnastik Club and chaser Istanbul Teknik University Sport Club.

A very exciting game (above) between Viorel Bologan and Dragan Solak finished last and became decisive for the match. The victory of Moldavian player brought a draw in the match for Istanbul Teknik University Sport Club, which placed second one point behind Besiktas. Ankara Gazi Üniversitesi Sport Club is on the third place with 13 points.

This year Turkish Isbank League has dress-code – all the teams should wear t-shirts with the club and TSF logo. Valentina Gunina didn’t know this rule at the beginning of the tournament, so she just wears one of her nice dresses. In few minutes the t-shirt was in the playing hall.
