The circuit started in 1997, with just a fistful of amateurs. Today Corsica
is staging the 15th edition, on an island that breaks the world record per capita
chess players (5375 active members in a population of 300,000). In a difficult
economic environment the organisers have managed to maintain the same level
of prizes (95,000 €), having mobilised a total of 124 sponsors! Hundreds
of young people participate in the festive event, which this year welcomes over
800 friends from the five continents.

Corsica Masters Knockout
This is the main attraction and produced the following results:

1/8th of an eventful final that saw the knockout of two favorites: Laurent
Fressinet by International Master Gabriel Battaglini and Pavel Tregubov by GM
Gawain Jones. Top seeds Anand and Mamedyarov went through, as did Cheparinov
and Open winner Sasikiran. In the quarter finals Cheparinov had a tough battle
against Battaglini, as did Sasikiran against Mamedov. Anand and Mamedyarov went
through smoothly. And in the semis the two beat Sasikiran and Cheparinov respectively,
with Anand having some anxious moments in the second game (he beat "Sasi"
2-0 in the tiebreaks after their two draws).
On Monday October 31st World Champion Viswanathan Anand meets Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
in the finals, which sees the players moving from Bastia to Ajaccio, where it
will take place in the magnificent setting of the convention centre.
