Bucharest Final: Caruana secures victory

by ChessBase
10/17/2013 – Despite his loss against Wang Hao in round nine, Caruana was not really in danger to lose his first place as Radjabov did not try to push too hard against him today. In a complicated position the Azerbaijani saw a perpetual and took it rather than risk standing worse. Wang Hao didn't let this influence his game and he beat Ponomariov in a long endgame. Analysis of today's action.

The opening ceremony of the 7th edition of Kings Tournament Romgaz took place on the 6th of October in the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (Piata Romana Nr.6). This international tournament is organized by the Sports Club “Elisabeta Polihroniade” and is a part of the Grand Slam circuit. The Kings Tournament will be a double round robin competition with 5 world-class participants: Fabiano Caruana (Italy, GM, 2779), the former World Cham pion Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, GM, 2756), Wang Hao (China, GM, 2736), Radjabov Teimour (Azerbaijan, GM, 2733) and Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu, (Romania, GM, 2665). This year’s edition will be played in the Magna Auditorium and Conference Hall "Virgil Madgearu" of the  Bucharest University of Economic Studies – a partner of the Kings Tournament. The rounds will start every day from the 7th until the 17th October at 3:30 p.m. (last round starts at 1:30 p.m) and entrance will be free for spectators.

Round 10

Round 10 – October 16, 13:30h

Radjabov, Teimour 2723
½-½
Caruana, Fabiano 2779
Nisipeanu, L.-D. 2674

The last round of the tournament saw Caruana no take any risks and he quickly drew Radjabov to guarantee himself his first place title. Wang Hao didn't lose his fighting spirit though and he pushed against a weakened Ponomariov and took the win. Here are some photographic impressions:

Wang Hao's 2-0 in the last two games catapulted him from the bottom of the table to clear second

Caruana avoided preparations by not using the Gruenfeld and Radjabov simply went for a perpetual in a little explored line

Even opposite colored bishops couldn't save the Ukrainian today against Wang Hao's persistence

Analysis of Round 10

Closing Ceremony

A brief closing ceremony took place after the games were finished.

A small speech by all the players, including the tournament's second place

Caruana won the tournament handedly, but he did have a scare when he lost in the penultimate round

The tournament would of course not be possible with the important help of the board of directors

And a final attempt at a group picture before the end
