WGP Geneva: six wins, five with black

5/11/2013 – It is a well-known fact that women play uncompromised chess! All six games in round seven of the Neva Fondation Women Grand Prix in Geneva were decisive, and the victories of Black outnumbered White’s success by 5 to 1. After the smoke cleared we found Anna Muzychuk and Bela Khotenashvili in the joint lead with 5.0/7 points and four rounds to go. Big pictorial report with GM analysis.

Neva Women's Grand Prix in Geneva

The Neva Foundation in partnership with the Internation Chess Federation (FIDE) has organised the first leg of the official Women's Grand Prix series for the first time in Geneva. From May 3 to May 15, twelve of the best women players featuring current Women World Champion Anna Ushenina from Ukraine, will confront each other at the N'vY Manotel. The tournament is an eleven-round all-play-all at classical time controls.

Bela Khotenashvili won another game to join Anna Muzychuk in the lead

Bela's victim this time: Lithunian GM Viktorija Cmilyte, who has lost three games
and has been playing almost 150 points below her nominal rating of 2522

The somewhat erratic performance in this event by former women's world champion Hou Yifan saw an encouraging win with the black pieces against one of her strongest rivals, Ukrainian GM Katerina Lahno.

There was an amusing little incident before the start of the game. Chinese WGM Ju Wenjun mixed up the tables and and took the place of Hou Yifan. Katerina was surprised to see her opponent from the previous round and said, “Do you want to play against me again??” – which brought a round of laughter in the tournament hall.

In the end Wenjun (above) found the correct table and went on to beat women's
world champion Anna Ushenina and take sole third place in this tournament

Alexandra Kosteniuk (above left) managed to break her unfortunate series of losses and ground down WGM Batchimeg Tuvshintugs, 200 rating points below her, with the black pieces.

It is considered to be the best.
