Anna Muzychuk (right) outplayed co-leader Tatiana Kosintseva in a game
that is extensively analysed by GM Adrian Mikhalchishin below.

Bela Khotenashvili won another game to join Anna Muzychuk in the lead

Bela's victim this time: Lithunian GM Viktorija Cmilyte, who has lost three games
and has been playing almost 150 points below her nominal rating of 2522

The somewhat erratic performance in this event by former women's world champion Hou Yifan saw an encouraging win with the black pieces against one of her strongest rivals, Ukrainian GM Katerina Lahno.

There was an amusing little incident before the start of the game. Chinese WGM Ju Wenjun mixed up the tables and and took the place of Hou Yifan. Katerina was surprised to see her opponent from the previous round and said, “Do you want to play against me again??” – which brought a round of laughter in the tournament hall.

In the end Wenjun (above) found the correct table and went on to beat women's
world champion Anna Ushenina and take sole third place in this tournament

Alexandra Kosteniuk (above left) managed to break her unfortunate series of losses and ground down WGM Batchimeg Tuvshintugs, 200 rating points below her, with the black pieces.

GM Nana Dzagnidze (above striped top) defeated Olga Girya and now has +1

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 A very interesting choice by Muzychuk, as Tatiana Kosintseva is big specialist of main lines and Anna Muzychuk herself is the best technician among girls. So her idea to play the Fischer Variation is a fantastic technical and psychological choice! dxc6 5.0-0 Bd6 This line has become popular recently, but in my opinion it is much more passive than other lines. 6.d4 exd4 7.Qxd4 f6 8.Be3 Ne7 9.Nbd2 Be6 10.Qc3! It is considered to be the best. White can try to increase pressure in the center 10.Rad1 Ng6 11.Nc4 Bxc4 12.Qxc4 Qe7 13.Rfe1 0-0-0 14.c3N Rhe8 15.Bc1 Bc5 16.Rxd8+ Rxd8 17.g3 Bb6 18.Kg2 Laznicka,V (2596) -Fressinet,L (2640)/Deutschland 2006 10...Qd7 11.Nd4 0-0-0 12.Nxe6 Qxe6 13.Qb3! A very good move to exchange queens, as White's pawn majority on the kingside will be very dangerous in the future. Qxb3 An interesting option is to avoid the exchange was 13...Qe5 14.f4 Qh5 15.Nc4 Kb8 16.Nxd6 Rxd6 17.Rae1 Re8 18.e5 fxe5 19.fxe5 Rd5 20.Bf4 Nf5 21.c3 g5 22.Bc1 Qg6 and Black started to take the initiative in Mladenov,P (2363)-Colin,V (2425)/ Saint Affrique 2010 14.axb3 Rhe8?! It seems the best way is to attack: 14...f5 15.Rad1 15.Rfd1 Rd7 16.Nc4 fxe4 17.Rd4 Nf5 18.Rxe4 Nxe3 19.Rxe3 Bc5 20.Re2 Bd4 1/2 Shyam,N (2385)-Sriram,J (2507)/Bhubaneswar 2010 15...b5 15...Rhe8 16.exf5? 1/2 Radjabov,T (2717)-Aronian,L (2756)/Sochi 2006 16.g3 Rhe8 17.Rfe1 fxe4 18.Nxe4 Nf5 19.Bg5 15.Rfd1 White has to keep her rook on a1 to be ready to play Ra5 at some moment. Ng6 16.f3 f5 I know from my considerable practice in different Spanish variations that these kind of positions are very difficut to hold. White has a comfortable pawn majority on the kingside and will capitalize on it sooner or later. 17.g3! Another try was possible too: 17.exf5 Rxe3 18.fxg6 hxg6 19.Kf2 Bc5 20.Kf1 Re5 21.Ne4 17...Be5 18.c3 f4?! Black tries to block the white pawn structure, but it is simply not possible. Slightly more active was 18...Rd3 19.exf5 Nh4 20.Nc4 Rxd1+ 21.Rxd1 Nxf5 22.Bf2 Bf6 23.Kf1 Re6 24.f4 Nd6 25.Nd2 19.Bf2 Rf8 20.Kg2 fxg3 After such move it is clear that Black's plan has failed. Or 20...Rd3 21.Nc4 Rfd8 22.Rxd3 Rxd3 23.h4 h5 24.Nxe5 Nxe5 25.gxf4 Nxf3 26.Ra5 Nd2 27.Re5 21.hxg3 Rd3 22.Kf1! h5 23.Ke2 Rd7 24.Nc4 Bf6 Maybe it was necessary to risk 24...Rdf7 25.f4 Bxf4 26.gxf4 Nxf4+ 27.Kd2 Re8 25.Rxd7 Kxd7 26.f4 From now it is clear that White has won fight on the kingside and her pawns will continue press the black pieces. h4 27.f5! hxg3 28.Bxg3 Ne7 29.Rg1 White is ready to attack the weakness on g7. c5 30.Bf4 Even better was 30.Kf3 30...b5 31.Ne3 Nc6 32.Nd5 Re8 A very bad endgame would appear after 32...Ne5 33.Nxf6+ gxf6 34.Bxe5 fxe5 35.Rg7+ Kc6 36.Rg6+ Kb7 37.Re6 33.Ke3 b4 34.Kd3 Very good was 34.Nxc7 Rh8 35.Nxa6 bxc3 36.Nxc5+ Ke7 37.bxc3 Bxc3 38.Rg6 34...bxc3 35.bxc3 Ne5+ 36.Bxe5 Bxe5 37.Rg6! All Black weaknesses are now maximally exposed. c6 38.Nb6+ Kc7 39.Na4 The power of the knight is its ability to attack different targets. A possible alternative attack was 39.Nc4 Bf6 40.Rg1 Rd8+ 41.Kc2 Re8 42.e5 Bxe5 43.Re1 39...Rh8 40.Kc4 Bf6 In the rook endgame the white pawns are much more dangerous 40...Rh3 41.Kxc5 Bxc3 42.Nxc3 Rxc3+ 43.Kd4 Rxb3 44.Rxg7+ Kd8 45.f6 41.Rg3! A very fine move, eliminating the activization of the black rook. Now White has a decisive advantage. Kd6 42.Nxc5 a5 Or 42...Ke5 43.Re3 Kf4 44.Re1 Rh4 45.b4 Kf3 46.Kd3 43.Rd3+ Ke5 44.Rd4! Kf4 45.Nd3+ Kg5 46.Rd6+- Re8 47.Nc5 Rc8 48.Ne6+ Kh4 No difference, with Black is losing, is seen after 48...Kg4 49.Nxg7 Bxg7 50.Rg6+ Kf4 51.Rxg7 Kxe4 52.f6 Ke5 53.f7 Rf8 54.Kc5 49.Nd4 Kg4 50.Rxc6 Ra8 51.Ne6 Ra7 52.Rc7 Ra8 53.Kd5 Rb8 54.e5 Bh4 55.Nd4 Yes, a game in Karpov or Carlsen style! 1–0
