13th Dubai Open Chess ChampionshipThe Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup is taking place from April 9th to 19th, 2011 in the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. It is a nine round Swiss, with time controls of one hour and 30 minutes for the whole game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move. The games start at 17:30h local time. There is a rest day with a blitz tournament on Friday, April 15, and two rounds to be played on Saturday, April 16, starting at 10:00 a.m. and 06:00 p.m. local time. The closing ceremony takes place on Tuesday, April 19, one day after the final (ninth) round, at 19:00h. |
The Dubai Chess and Culture Club is the most modern and biggest dedicated chess club in the world. Its players constitute the ‘backbone” of the UAE national team, and as a matter of fact those players have achieved outstanding successes on all levels. The number of registered players is 107 and a board of nine members, in addition to a technical team consisting of management and coaches runs the club. Here are some pictures:

The Club has organized many international and local events among which are the following: Youth Blitz World Chess championship 1985, Blitz Chess Tournament for participants in Dubai Olympiad 1986, Dubai Open Chess Championship and Credit Swiss Chess Masters Tournament 1994, and the Asian Cities Team Chess Championship (Dubai Cup) 1996. In addition its technical team took part in the organization of all international events held in UAE.
Since its launching, the Dubai Chess & Culture Club has played a leading role in the chess activity in UAE, achieving for the country many successes on the international, continental and Arab levels. The Club has also played an imminent role through its administrative members who contributed in promoting chess and leading the chess activity along with their chess colleagues through out UAE.

If two or more players share the same place, the money will be equally shared. The trophy will be awarded on the basis of average rating of the eight strongest opponents. There is a special US $2300 prize for ladies, and a special US $6000 prize for local players.
