When you think of Naples, you might think of the central Italian city with its beautiful historic center and Mediterranean views. Or maybe you just think of pizza, which was invented there. But there is also a Naples, Florida, on the west coast of the fourth-most populous American state. It may not have the Mediterranean views, but there are great beaches, the Everglades National Park, and, according to online reviews, "Napoli on the Bay" pizza gets four stars.
More importantly, this town of 21,000 will host former world champion Garry Kasparov in the first week of April. After a speaking engagement, Kasparov will give a fundraising event, in which players can donate to face him in a simul themselves, sponsor a local junior, or even sit down face to face against the famous Kasparov glare in a blitz game.
That would be enough for chess fans, but vintage car aficionados may have an even better reason to make the trek. (There's actually an airport quite nearby.) The event will take place in one of the Meccas of classic car fans, the Collier Automotive Museum, which is located in Naples. The Museum is usually only open to car club members or by special appointment, so this is a rare opportunity. It should also be a most interesting backdrop for Kasparov. Perhaps we will find out if he knows how to drive! Of course we'll be bringing you photos and games from the event.
The Collier Automotive Museum
Directions from downtown Naples:
Each participant will get to keep the game board, signed by Kasparov, as well as a photo and DVD of the encounter. You can also sponsor a local junior chessplayer in the simul, according to the organizers. One of the simul participants will also win a drawing to play a blitz game against Kasparov. There are two other blitz games for donors to purchase. To keep to the event's evening timetable, the simul is limited to amateurs (no players rated over 2000). But we understand there's no such limit for the blitz. Maybe an enterprising GM would like a shot at the famous retiree?
Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player of all time, will play with you or someone you sponsor in the unique setting of one of the world’s greatest private collection of automobiles. Every game participant will be presented with the autographed board on which you play Garry, a photograph taken with Garry, a DVD of the event, and a signed certificate.
