A. Karpov – Candidate for President of World Chess Federation

The Russian chess news site e3.35 reported that the meeting today of the Supervisory Board of RCF was attended by 18 of its 32 members. The opening remarks were delivered by Garry Kasparov, who told the audience that the previous reports in the media, stating that the Russian Chess Federation would support the candidacy of the current FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, did not match reality. After this the participants unanimously voted for the nomination of Anatoly Karpov as candidate for the FIDE presidency. The head of the Supervisory Board, A. Dvorkovich, and FIDE President Ilyumzhinov, did not attend the meeting. Supporters of Ilyumzhinov, who were present at the meeting, declared their intention to challenge the results, according to the radio Ekho Moskvy, Gazety.ru.

A. Dvorkovich: Karpov's nomination for FIDE Presidency "illegitimate"

According to Gazety.ru, there were two simultaneous meetings of the Supervisory Board of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF) on Friday in Moscow. One was attended by the supporters of the nomination for FIDE presidency of Anatoly Karpov, and the other by the Chairman of the Chess Federation Supervisory Board Arkady Dvorkovich. Dvorkovich told Gazety.Ru that "both meetings were not legitimate: at the first meeting, attended by Karpov, there was a quorum but no Chairman of the Supervisory Board; and at the second meeting, attended by Dvorkovich, there was no quorum. The incumbent President of FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, was not present at either of the meetings.

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has commented on the situation on the "illegitimate meeting of the Supervisory Board of RCF" and the nomination for president of Anatoly Karpov: "It reminds me of the situation in the early 90s, in which Kasparov and Karpov were involved. At that time, as you know, the chess world collapsed inot two parallel organizations, with two or three champions. And now, unfortunately, they have begun to split it again. One wants to become president of the country, the other the president of FIDE. But we have a democracy. It's a pity that they are splitting the RCF.

We are not sure about accuracy of the translation of these reports, so we provide the originals at the bottom. Especially the idea of a one-person counter meeting sounds like a misunderstanding. The vote in the 32-member council on the other hand appears to be real. The Karpov Campaign site has just posted details, including the names of seventeen delegates who voted for Karpov.

По сообщению Газеты.ru, в пятницу в Москве прошли сразу два заседания Наблюдательного совета Российской шахматной федерации (РШФ). На одном из них присутствовал один из претендентов на выдвижение на пост президента ФИДЕ от РШФ Анатолий Карпов, а на другом – председатель Наблюдательного совета РШФ Аркадий Дворкович. По завершении обоих заседаний Дворкович заявил корреспонденту Газеты.Ru, что "оба заседания были нелегитимны": на первом заседании, на котором присутствовал Карпов, был собран кворум, но не было председателя Наблюдательного совета, а на втором заседании, на котором присутствовал сам Дворкович, не было собрано кворума. Действующего президента ФИДЕ Кирсана Илюмжинова не было ни на одном из заседаний.
