Giri on a rampage at the Dutch Open Championship

by ChessBase
7/26/2009 – The Open Netherlands Championship is taking place in Dieren, Holland. Jan Timman is playing here for the first time in several decades – he was Open Champion in 1970, when still a junior! But the talk of the town is Anish Giri, just turned fifteen, currently the world's youngest grandmaster. Anish has won every game in the first five rounds. His performance: a stunning 3164!

The Open Netherlands Championship is taking place in Dieren from July 21st-30th 2009. The first prize is 3000 Euros, up by€750 from the previous year. The second prize is €2000, the third €1,200.

After winning his first four games Giri faced a strong GM in round five, and had the black pieces. The lad went on the attack and played a gem of a game.

Black is ready to start an attack on the queenside. Nijboer is trying to create confusion: 23...Rh5! 24.Qd2. He cannot touch the pawn: 24.Qxg7 Ne8 25.Qg8 the only square left for the queen. 25...f5 26.Qg6 Bf7 and the lady is lost! 24...Rd8 25.Qc1 a4 26.Rf3 Rd6. A plausible alternative was 26...Nxe4 27.Bxe4 Qc4 (threatening ...Qxa2#) 28.b3 Qxe4 29.Rxd8 Kxd8 30.Rd3+. Anish Giri said that he did not trust this variation entirely: "I thought it was dangerous and could ruin my attack. Frisor was already in time trouble and could not do much, so I decided to keep the pressure on." 27.Re1 Kf8 28.b3 Nd7 29.Ref1 f6 30.Qe1 Kf7 31.Rg1 Rh8 32.g3 Rc8 33.gxh4

Has White managed to create counterplay on the g-file? "No, I am much faster," said Giri. 33...axb3 34.Qg3 Rxd3 0-1. After 35.Qxg7+ Ke8 36.Qh8+ Nf8 37.Qh5+ Bf7 and Black will mate his opponent. [Click to replay]

Jan Timman is playing in the Dutch Open for the first time in several decades – he was Open Champion as far back as 1970, when still a junior! Although now 58, and not the powerhouse he once was, Timman retains enormous class, especially in technical positions. His round three game against Eric Hoeksema was a textbook example of exploiting the bishop pair in the ending.
