I would like to offer my opinion on the changes to the world championship system, proposed during the Olympiad in Dresden.

If there is to be a candidates' tournament, then, first of all, it is important to know how the rating threshold for entry will be determined. It seems to me that, since the tournament will take place in 2010, then those players allowed in on the basis of rating should be the best (one or more) on the list for 1 January 2010, and other rating lists should not be taken into account.

In addition, the FIDE nominee should have a rating of at least 2740 (not 2700, as suggested by FIDE). He should be someone from the top ten. Already now we have 32 players over 2700, and by 1 January 2010, there will be even more!

I think that the championship is stretched out over too long a period, lasting until 2011. The policy of allowing the world champion to come in only at the very end is a gradual return to the days of the past.

I propose the following. Run the Candidates tournament in 2010 not with eight players, but with 14 or 12, using the knockout system. Allow in the eight players suggested by Ilyumzhinov, and determine the remaining places by the results of the 2009 World Cup and the 1 January 2010 rating list. But under no circumstances should the results of the current Grand Prix be taken into account, because too many of the top players (e.g. Morozevich, Shirov, Kramnik, Ponomariov, etc.) are already unable to take part in it.

Thus, there will be 14 players, and they will play one round, leaving seven. Then the world champion will join them, and these eight will contest the championship on equal terms.

If there are 12 players, then the first round will leave six, and after the second round there will be three. The world champion will then join in, and the winner from these four will then be the absolute world champion, after which it will be possible to start planning a new cycle.

Хочу выразить свое мнение по поводу изменений системы розыгрыша чемпионата мира ФИДЕ, предложенных во время Олимпиады в Дрездене.

Если турнир претендентов состоится, то, во-первых, важно знать, какой именно "первый рейтинг" для попадания в него будет учитываться. Мне кажется, что, поскольку турнир состоится в 2010 году, то по рейтингу нужно допускать лучшего (или лучших) на 1 января 2010 года, а остальные рейтинги в расчет не принимать.

Кроме того, номинант от ФИДЕ должен иметь рейтинг не ниже, чем 2740 (а не 2700, как предлагает ФИДЕ). Это должен быть игрок хотя бы из первой десятки. Сейчас уже 32 человека имеют рейтинг выше 2700, и на 1 января 2010 года таких игроков будет еще больше!

Считаю, что чемпионат слишком растянут - аж до 2011 года. Времена, когда чемпион включается в борьбу лишь в самом конце (и встречается с прошедшим тяжелейший отбор претендентом) уже начинают потихоньку уходить в прошлое.

Я предлагаю следующее. Провести турнир претендентов 2010 года не из восьми, а из 14-ти или 12-ти игроков по нокаут-системе. Допустить туда тех восьмерых игроков, которых предлагает господин Илюмжинов, а остальные места определить по результатам Кубка мира-2009 и по рейтингу на 1 января 2010 года. Но ни в коем случае не по результатам проходящего ныне Гран-при, так как многие сильнейшие шахматисты (например, Морозевич, Широв, Крамник, Пономарев и др.) уже не могут принять в нем участие.

Итак, если будет 14 человек, то они сыграют первый матч - останется семеро. Затем к ним добавляется чемпион мира, и эта восьмерка уже на равных борется за звание.

Если будет 12 человек, то после первого матча останется шесть победителей, после второго - три. К ним присоединяется чемпион, и кто из этой четверки выиграет, тот и будет абсолютным чемпионом мира, после чего можно будет начинать планировать новый цикл.
