Fighting games at the Third Amsterdam Chess Tournament

7/19/2006 – This annual is being stage taking place from July 15–23, with 446 players in four groups. The A group (Elo > 2225, first prize 3500 euro) has attracted 86 participants including 14 GMs and 22 IMs – favourites are Tiviakov, Nijboer, Timman, L’Ami, and others. The 3rd Amsterdam Chess Tournament is taking place from July 15th to 23rd, 2006 in the Speellocatie Studenten sportcentrum USC, De Boelelaan 46, Amsterdam Buitenveldert, Netherlands. The 446 player Swiss tournament (9 rounds) is being held in 4 groups (A, B, C and D). The A group (Elo > 2225, first prize 3500 euro) has attracted 86 participants including 14 GMs and 22 IMs. The 2500+ players are: Tiviakov 2668, Nijboer 2598, Timman 2594, L’Ami 2586, Erenburg 2585, Ftacnik 2579, Stellwagen 2575, Al-Modiahki 2564, Tukmakov 2560, Halkias 2551, Li 2540, Vazquez Igarza 2517, Cuijpers 2510, Parker 2509 and Ernst 2504.

The venue: the University of Amsterdam Sport Centre (USC)


A capoeira demonstration at the opening ceremons. Capoeira is a lively Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music with fighting techniques. We remember seeing this performed in Morelia.


Group A, with a 2225+ Elo requirement, attracted 86 participants (above the top boards).


Groups C (right, Elo 1575-1875, 132 participants), and D (left, Elo < 1575, 86 participants).
