Team Championship – The Homecoming

by ChessBase
8/13/2005 – Last Sunday the European Team Championship ended with a great victory by the Netherlands. The Dutch players were given an enthusiastic welcome by officials and fans at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. We have great pictures by Frits Agterdenbos, and also bring you some interesting performance statistics in our Gothenburg retrospect.

15th European Chess Team Championship

Before we begin there is something we need to clear up. Duif Calvin of San Rafael, California, drew our attention to another "tiny little error in your wonderful coverage of the European Team Championship." In one of our articles we wrote that Holland was leading. Not correct, writes Duif. "Holland" is only one section of the Netherlands. So saying "Holland leads" instead of "the Netherlands leads" would be like saying "Moscow leads" instead of "Russia leads", or "the California team" instead of "the American team." Duif, who originally hails from Holland – or the Netherlands – whose ancestors were Dutch, sent us a map to illustrate.

It turns out that the origin of the misnomer lies in the fact that in the 16th to 18th centuries Holland was the economic powerhouse of the region. After the Napoleonic era, it became a mere province of the Kingdom and, in 1840, it was in fact split into North and South Holland. The people from other, mainly southern, provinces object to the use of "Holland" for The Netherlands. The natives call their country "Nederland" ("low land"). They call themselves Nederlanders and their language Nederlands. The older term for the latter was Diets, from which we get our Dutch.

Incidentally, the day we received the admonition from Duif, Paramount aired a Seinfeld episode which starts with the following little dialog:

George: What is Holland?
Jerry: What do you mean, 'what is it?' It's a country, right next to Belgium.
George: No, that's the Netherlands.
Jerry: Holland is the Netherlands.
George: Then who are the Dutch?

So we were not the only ones. But we make a mental note: it was the Netherlands that won the European cup in Yutt-eh-borrrJ. For the future we can only hope that the event will be held in an easily pronounceable place and only with countries participating which have a single, clearly defined name.

The homecoming

After their great victory at the 15th European Team Championships the Dutch (did we get that right?) team arrived at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and was greeted by a small crowd carrying banners of the Dutch Chess Federation. Frits Agterdenbos was one of the group and sent us the following pictures.

Banners of the Federation unfurled to welcome the Dutch team

Officials of the Federation were also present to congratulate the players and hand over flowers. Children clamoured for autographs.

Press conference with Herman Hamers (captain of the men's team), GM Karel van der Weide (captain of the lady's team), Ivan Sokolov and Jan Timman

At the press conference captain Herman Hamers told journalist how he thought the success of the Dutch team was achieved. It was mainly a result of the good atmosphere within the team, and it was not an an isolated incident. Van Wely said that the Netherlands must now be considered one of the best teams in the world. The general feeling was that in spite of the success as a team performance, chess remains an individual game. There are limits to cooperation. Players will not share their opening novelties. But lending and borrowing laptops is okay.

Statistics

Here are some interesting statistics and individual results of the 2005 Team Championships. First we take an obligatory look at the drawing averages.

So once again the women's section resulted in more decisive games. The average overall Elo in the men's section was 2515, with White performing at 2550 and Black at 2480. The average Elo in the women's section was 2276, with White performing at 2313 and Black at 2241.

Next we look at the individual results and performances. Germany's board two player Alexander Graf, previously known as Alexander Nenachev, tops the list with a 2801 performance in eight games. It is great to see Jan Timman in the list at place 10 with a performance of 2735.

Individual results of the top ten men's teams

In the men's section we must draw attention to the Greek team, which was hardly mentioned in our reports. Greece is not usually a country that comes to mind when you are talking about chess – but then again it wasn't the great soccer nation until it was cheeky enough to win the the European title in 2004. In Gothenburg the Greek team missed the Bronze medal by the tiniest of tiebreak margins. We congratulate these emerging champions for their remarkable success – and apologise to all the Greeks who wrote in, complaining that we had been ignoring their lads.

Individual results of the top ten women's teams

Here the Poles were the stars, with a surprisingly clear victory ahead of the favourites Russia, Ukraine and Georgia. In the first half it was the Romanians who dominated, so there are a number of other teams who could have easily made the medals' list. So there is a lot of competition and fight in women's chess.
