15th European Chess Team Championship

We return to the critical theme of this European Team Championship: the pronounciation of the host city. Coeglin of Gothenburg did not react favourably to our recent intructions. He (or she, or it) wrote "on behalf of the entire Swedish population":

Hehe, 'yet a boy' is not right. At all. In fact, its hilarious! Maybe the problem lies in the female "native Swede" speaker, who is definitely not a native Swede. My guess is that she's English. Listen to the male voice instead. He's Swedish. The problem doesn't even lie in the pronounciation of the 'ö'-vowel. That one is easy. It's just like the 'u' in burst, or 'ö' in the German 'schön', not like the 'e' in the English 'yet'. You must have gotten that from that English female who failed miserably at pronouncing Göteborg. The biggest problem is usually the 'r'-sounds, but there are also some problems in the 'g'-sounds. Swedes pronounces 'g' more direct, more guttural, less soft and less 'j'-like.

If you pronounce the city like "yet a boy", people will wonder wheather your tongue has been clipped, or if your handicapped. But on the other hand, we are not like the French and we don't really care whether you can speak Swedish or not. We are happy to practise our English, so stick to that wonderful universal language and everyone will be happy!

Well, there you have it. Future European Championships must be held in places with simple names, like Riga, Turku or Oslo, all just a stone's throw away from . Main thing: avoid places like Örnsköldsvik. If it must be Sweden go for the charming Uppsala – there can't be a major problem with that.

Back to the chess: we have been receiving complaints that there were no (or very few) pictures of the female of the species, which was apparently sighted by a number of visitors in Gothenburg. We asked our trusted photographer Frits Agterdenbos to confirm and he sent us clear evidence in his latest photo report. The games are now also there – they usually become available on the following day. They are in excellent quality, as are all the results and statistics provided by the official web site.

As mentioned in the blurb Azerbaijan felt the wrath of Israel, which joined France the lead with the 3½-½ pounding it gave the Azeris. The Ukraines also lashed out against Germany, and moved to the top of the table, with the most board points (14.5/20).

In the women's section Poland stopped the Romanian rampage, while Russia showed France who was the real hot favourite. The Russian girls now have the most board points but are second to Poland, which has 9/10 match points.
