The first round ended very promisingly, with four decided games out of five. The shortest was the crunch by German talent Arkadij Naiditsch against Israeli GM Emil Sutovsky (28 moves), which set the tone for Nielsen-Bacrot (1-0 in 36). Peter Leko outplayed Loek van Wely, after the Dutch GM had exchanged a knight for three pawns, but lost one of them soon after and then was without chances against the precision of the Hungarian champion. Adams won a 55-mover against Topalov, while Kramnik and Svidler played an uneventful 25-move draw.
