Reactions to Kasparov' retirement

In the past three days we have received a large number of letters from readers who were shocked by Garry Kasparov's decision to withdraw from professional chess. Many of them contained a request that we install a page where they could express their feelings for this great chess player. We have set up a feedback form and promise to pass all messages on to Garry Kasparov.

Below you will find some of the reactions that have reached us, and a selection of newspaper and Internet articles that have appeared on Kasparov's retirement.

Alon Rozen, Weston, Australia
Thanks for an exciting coverage of chess news, but... The top player in the last 20 years just retired and all you published is one article on the subject? I will really appreciate some more comments from top players, some reactions from FIDE, some links to articles around the world, an interview with the men himself...

Ruud van Caspel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Don't leave us, Garry. In a Godless universe Man has to be Creator. You are the creator of the immortal game. Don't leave us out here in the cold, Garry.

Adie Viljoen, Pretoria, South Africa
Thanks ChessBase – you are the best internet chess site – I visit your site nearly daily. Kasparov – what a figure and player! I have this glimmer of hope that he'll not retire altogether and continue to grace chess with his brilliance, personality and example His the hero of so many!

IM Tom O'Donnell, Ottawa, Canada
I would like to thank Mr. Kasparov for giving this chess fan dozens of wonderful memories. I hope that his post-chess career is as fulfilling to him as his 20-year reign as the greatest player has been. We are lucky to have been witness to his amazing achievements and I am sad to consider that we may not see another like him in our lifetimes.

Andy Smith Bath, England
Garry won't remember beating me in a simul in 1999, but I will for the rest of my life and will be proud to tell my grandchildren that I once played against the great man. Thank you Garry Kasparov, all the best in your future ventures.

Christopher Britt, Houston USA
I am an avid reader of chessbase.com and I have been a huge fan of Garry Kasparov for over ten years. I was saddened today to learn of his retirement. I would like to send Garry Kasparov a letter of thanks for his inspiration to me over the years. I am writing to inquire of a way to send a message to Kasparov. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Robert Wilder Bear, Delaware, USA
Please encourage Garry to set up an email account so that all his admirers can wish him well. If you were to compile a list of nobodies, I would not even make that list; and yet I have admired his chess and drive and fighting spirit and creativity for decades now. I think My Great Predecessors will be recognized as a tremendous work; I think he revitalized the sport of chess; I hope he reconsiders and gives us many more years of the incredible chess that we have grown used to and do take for granted. We wish him well!

Mark Warriner, Richmond, VA USA
Dear ChessBase – This is a very sad day for chess. While I understand and respect Garry Kimovich's personal decision, I cannot help but think of the hundreds of brilliant games that will remain unplayed. It is simply terrible that the chess-playing community cannot bring itself together enough to have an accepted, organized system for selecting a World Champion. Surely somewhere in the world there must be individuals with the vision, the determination and the means to ensure a viable World Chess Championship cycle. Thank you Garry Kimovich for so many years of devotion and delightful games. I hope that you will continue to produce many educational and entertaining books and DVDs, and continue to help amateurs around the world learn and appreciate the depth and the beauty of the game of chess.

Stan Simmons, Kingston, Canada
I understand Garry Kasparov's reasons for retiring, and think he has chosen the right time. But I can't help but wonder – did he really slip in his last game, or did he realize in a sudden flash of brilliance that QxQf1 would provide him with the most poetic of all exits: The king is dead, long live the king! Although I am a rank amateur and have only had my interest in chess rekindled in the past six years or so, that new-found interest was due almost entirely to Garry Kasparov and his exploits in chess, especially the man-machine matches. I therefore feel very sad at the news of his retirement, knowing that I will no longer be able to enjoy the thrill of following his games while trying to guess the next move of this chess genius.

Ted Summers, Atlanta, GA USA
To a Great King,: I bid you farewell. Thank you Garry Kasparov for years of really great chess games & for being a really Great World Champion! I really hope future champions will follow in your footsteps. You were a Chess Champion that at least played chess and did not sit on your title. You like Karpov before you proved to the world why you should be called World Chess Champion. Thanks Again Garry, you will be missed...

Fabrice Wantiez, Brussels, Belgium
Can you create a link to a page for thanks to Kasparov for all he has accomplished in his last 30 years? This page will contain all signatures and comments for players from all around the world. Thanks for all!

Arifur Rahman, Wokingham, UK
It’s with great sadness I read your breaking news that Kasparov is quitting chess. ChessBase, you guys have given us so much chess information and delight over the years on your web site. But please don’t deny us on this occasion, please post the entire Kasparov press conference video. We want to hear this sad story with Kasparov’s voice. I know that this conference will appear in next ChessBase magazine. So long wait for so many…please do us this favour, we will be very grateful.

Colin Everett, Seoul
Hi guys, you've simply go to put the whole press conference up for all to see. This is pretty historic don't ye think? I think everyone would really like to see the full press conference!

Henrik Boye Laursen Nærum, Denmark
This is really sad for the Chess World. I'm thinking of the song by Frank Sinatra "My way" and feeling blue.

Jeremy Davies London
I am a simple chess club player, and am a massive fan of the game. Like a lot of other enthusiasts, I do not understand all the political issues that have been affecting chess over the years. However, what I can say is that if Garry Kasparov has given up chess because of the politics, it is a very sad day for all of us. The world will be a poorer place for the loss of his genius, and those who have caused this should feel ashamed. Regards Jeremy Davies

Jacob Bardino, Århus C
Please make a tribute page for this man, this legend. He surely deserves the tribute of all his fans.

Fernando Semprun, Madrid, Spain
It has been an amazing shock. Kasparov brought life to chess that was empty when Fischer did not play after Reykjavik. He had to play four matches in four years (!!) to finally overcome Karpov (1984-87). Possibly he should not have left FIDE but then he played the strongest, Anand and Kramnik. After 2000, Kramnik's behaviour has been terrible for chess. Ducking Kasparov relentlessly after Astana 2001. This has finally ended in Garry's retirement. He even did not play in the last two tournaments he was meant to play against Kasparov. In all chess servers the Kasparov games bring the most spectators, yet there are people that bitterly criticise him. I join ChessBase: Thank you Gary for 30 magnificent years, but today I am very sad.

Julio Mendoza, Frankfort, USA
I want to congratulate Kasparov for his excellent result, excellent games, and good fighting spirit at Linares 2005. I declare Garry Kasparov "World Chess Champion", since he has widely proved it during his professional career, and has been the # 1 player in the rating list during many years. He sure does not need any official title. He is simply the World Chess Champion! Hopefully everyone will agree with me. Bravo!!

John Rodrigues Stratford, CT USA
I am shocked and saddened to hear of Kasparov's retirement. He is one of my hero's – a complete champion at the board and off. Kasparov has inspired me in many ways – to me he represents the best of what a chess player and a human being can be. It is sad he has not gotten the respect of FIDE – they have helped to contribute to his disenchantment with the game of chess and ultimately his retirement. I hope Garry knows that his name is synonymous with chess greatness – and I believe as a complete player he has no equal. May his career be remembered always. I wish Garry success in all his future endeavors.

Alan Hartley Portland, Oregon
Dear Mr. Kasparov, your play is an inspiration to all who love chess especially me, as I'd rather believe I'm not over the hill at forty) and I know I am not alone when I say that I have been rooting for you, not against you, for years. Are you sure it isn't too late to change your mind?

Marcelo Mendes, Salvador, Brazil
I always followed Garry Kasparov's career and I think he's made the correct decision. There's no point in playing anymore when he's achieved everything that is possible for a player to do. An end like Karpov's, running miles from strong tournaments and being easily beaten by players that don't deserve the glory of outplaying a legend!? No... It doesn't sound like Kasparov's ending. I'm currently listening to a music I like very much. It's "Hollow", by Pantera. Pantera's former guitarist, Dimebag Darrel, was brutally killed last year, by a fan that accused him of ending the Pantera. I had a bad feeling when I read the article about Kasparov's retirement. We all know that there are lots of chess players that can't be defined as normal people. And even more players have worked hard to get somewhere with chess, and have not succeeded. And his decision for sure will not be accepted easily by the chess world. Gary Kimovich, thanks for what you've done to chess. You know you'll be always remembered.

David Ochodnicky, Royal Oak, MI
I am crushed about this news! This is devastating. I've studied chess for years now, and like so many others I have been inspired by Garry Kasparov's tournaments, his computer matches, his game against the world, his books. He's the only living chess player who has inspired me not only in chess, but on an artistic level, on a personal level. Any of us chess enthusiasts who have been fortunate enough to follow classical chess know that Garry Kasparov represents true greatness, overflowing energy, historical accomplishment, and the desire to build the game he loves and to give back. We have witnessed the work of a true genius. I'm sure I'll never meet Garry Kasparov and I'll never be anything other than a club level player. But he will always be a hero of mine. He embodies everything that the word "Champion" means to me. Thanks for the chance to vent my feelings a little and for showcasing Mr. Kasparov's work for the many years I've visited this website. Let's wish Garry Kasparov and his family the greatest blessings in our hearts for his retirement.
