The International Chess Open Festival "Aeroflot Open 2005" starts in Moscow on Tuesday, Feb. 15 (first round) in the Hotel Rossija, directly next to the Red Square. There are 515 confirmed participants. These play in four groups:
Tournament A1: for players with a FIDE rating higher than 2549. The prizes here are $30,000 for first, $17,000 for second, $10,000 for third, $5,000 for 4th, $3,000 for 5th, etc. down to $500 each for 21st-30th.
Tournament A2: for players with a FIDE rating of less than 2550, but higher than 2399. The prizes range from $12,000 for first to $1,500 for fifth, going down to $500 for 16th-25th.
Tournament B: for players with a FIDE rating of less than 2400, but higher than 2199. Prizes range from $5,000 for first to $800 for fifth, and $250 for 26th-35th.
Tournament C: for players with a FIDE rating lower than 2200 or without rating. Prizes are $3000 for first, $500 for fifth, $200 for 26th to 35th.
There are special prizes for the best performance among seniors, women and juniors in all tournaments, and rating prizes (total 5000 USD). The exact distribution of the special prizes shall be published after the start of the tournament, when the numbers of seniors, women and juniors and the ratings of the payers in the festival are known.
Time controls: Tournament A1 and A2 are played at 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves in 1 hour, finally 15 minutes for the remaining moves with an increment of 30 seconds per move in the last period. Tournament B and C: 90 minutes for the whole game with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move 1.

The Aeroflot Open 2005 will take place in Europe's largest hotel, the "Rossija", which is located in downtown Moscow, 200 meters from the Kremlin, surrounded by an array of architectural monuments of XV - XVII centuries. Sightseeing places known all over the world, museums, theaters, shopping and entertainment centers, restaurants and casinos are closely to the hotel.

"Rossija" is rated as a three stars (***) hotel, and has in fact won the prize of "best Moscow 3-star Hotel" in 1998 and 2000. It has 2876 rooms. You can choose a single or a double room, a suite or an apartment. All the hotel rooms have necessary conveniences: a bathroom/toilet room, a refrigerator, a TV-set and a local and long-distance telephone.
There are a variety of restaurants, cafes, bars in the hotel, offering mainly Russian cuisine, but also with specialities of the house. They are called "Zolotoi Zal", "Vasilyevsky", "Sever" and the famous "Kremlyovsky". With a capacity of up to 500 guests. it is possible to arrange banquets, cocktail parties, wedding celebration – and chess tournaments.

For journalists the organisers are offering packages which include include flight, hotel accommodation 5 or 10 nights and transfer. A package in a single room costs between $400-500 for five nights and $575-675 for ten nights.
