Corus 08: Short, Morozevich, Topalov win

by ChessBase
1/23/2005 – The key game of the day, Anand vs Kramnik, was an interesting 27-move draw. Nigel Short and Alexander Morozevich won with white, Topalov succeeded with black. And there was plenty of action in the other groups. Topalov now has the sole lead, with Leko, Adams and Anand in hot pursuit. Full illustrated report.

Let us take a peek at the other participants, slugging it out in groups B and C. We really mean slugging it out. Did you notice that in the C group today six of the seven games were decided. And that in five of these six games Black was victorious? Well here are some pictures from the category 13 Group B.

Sergey Karjakin, the Ukraine prodigy who became a grandmaster and second to a world champion (Ponomariov) before he became a teenager. He turned 15 a couple of weeks ago and is in second place in the B Group.

This is Alexandra Kosteniuk, whose moonlighting in modelling and acting sometimes tend to let us forget that she is one of the strongest female players in the world.

Antoaneta ("Etti") Stefanova, the reigning women's world champion

Another child prodigy, but whose name doesn't start with a "K" (it just sounds that way). Magnus Carlsen, the bright chess hope from Norway and, at 14, the youngest grandmaster in the world today.

Alejandro Ramirez Alvarez, 16, grandmaster and shockingly bright. Alejandro is Costa Rica's first grandmaster and could probably play a simultaneous exhibition against all the other chess players in his country.

Veteran GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, 20, from Azerbaijan (just like you-know-who), is leading the B Group by a full point.

WGM Tea Lanchava, born in Georgia, now living in Holland
