Tripoli is the capital of Libya. The city is located in the northwest of the country, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. At the turn of the century its population of the Ottoman province of Tripoli had risen to over a million – the same as the main city today.
