World Chess ChampionshipFriday, June 4th, 2004 – After her sensational first-round victory with the black pieces Bulgarian WGM Antoaneta won the second game as well, grinding down her opponent Russian WGM Ekaterina Kovalevskaya in 67 moves of a Queen's Gambit Declined.
With this second win Stefanova has taken a 2-0 lead in this six-game final to the Women's World Chess Championship. Tomorrow Kovalevskaya badly needs to win her second white game to remain in contention.
All six games will be played on consecutive days without interruption. You can watch them live on the FIDE web site or on the Playchess.com server.
In
a press conference after the game Stefanova looked quite exhausted, explaining
this to the journalists, with three weeks of continuous play. Asked about the
fact that she was wearing the same outfit as in game one the Bulgarian player
said, "I am not superstitious. It is important for me to feel comfortable,
that’s all." And in reply to a question whether she had ever imagined
coming so close to the world championship title she said, "I think all
the participants were dreaming about this at the start of the tournament. I
always intend to win and this explains everything."
