Barnardo's

their lives and fulfil their potential. They are Britain's largest children's
charity, supporting 100,000 children and their families through more than
300 projects in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Barnardo's
helps children, young people and their families over the long term to overcome
the most severe disadvantages – problems like abuse, homelessness
and poverty – and to tackle the challenges of disability.
The British Land Company
is one of the major quoted UK property companies, with the largest total
funds under management of £11 billion.
Barnardo’s,
The British Land Company PLC and Chess Academy have joined forces to launch
the first ever National Chess Week, beginning on Monday 20th October 2003.
More than half a million children and young people throughout the UK will have the opportunity to play at least one game of chess during the week.
For every game played, each player will pay £1 to Barnardo’s to help fund their work to help disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
During
the National Chess Week for Barnardo’s, there will be lots of events taking
place up and down the country and online too. As well as playing chess against
your friends one can also take part in an online Celebrity Chess Challenge or
Pit your Witz against the powerful Fritz Chess Program. If you want to take
part, you will find instructions on how to participate here.
