Acs (pronounced "oks" – correction here) is 22 years old and at Elo 2606 Hungary's number four player, behind Peter Leko, Judit Polgar and Zoltan Almasi. One of his greatest successes was the first place in last year's Essent Crown Tournament in Hoogeveen, ahead of Judit Polgar, FIDE world champion Alexander Khalifman and GM Loek van Wely. Here's what he did to the top Dutch player:

Elo development of Peter Acs:

The program Shredder was written by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen. It is one of the most successful programs in computer chess tournaments, winning the world championship title no less than four times. The current version of Shredder is also number one on the computer rating lists.

At the VI Magistral de la Republica Argentina in Buenos Aires in August Shredder finished first with 8.5/10 points, easily making a GM norm with its 2752 performances.

In Budapest "transtec-Shredder" was running on a transtec Dual 3 Ghz XEON computer.

The games

In the first game Peter Acs, playing with the white pieces, went for a closed, positional Four Knights game. But Shredder took the initiative on the kingside and the game became very sharp. Acs took up the fight and went for an all-out attack. But Shredder kept everything under control, manoeuvred its badly exposed king to a safe square and won the game in convincing style. The public was delighted by the fighting spirit in this game.

The second encounter was a Scotch game which the Hungarian GM could keep the position equal for a long time. In the endgame with rook, knight and pawn Shredder had a tiny advantage, but the computer demonstrated superb endgame technique to win this game as well.
