Kasparov starts to play at the Olympiad

by ChessBase
10/28/2002 – Garry Kasparov removed his wristwatch and placed it on his left side. However, it is not like Wijk Aan Zee or Linares, where he can play chess in silence and solemnity. At the 35th Bled Chess Olympiad he is there for the masses – fans who have traveled as far as Africa, South America and Asia to see the world's greatest living player in action. The results of round two are available here.

The organisers report:

Players of different ages tore themselves away from their boards to get a glimpse of Kasparov deep in thought, or just pacing while waiting for his opponent to move. The right side of the converted hockey rink which was the venue of the Olympiad was filled with spectators and players, all trying to catch Kasparov in action. Some, unsucessfully, tried to take pictures from the stands.

This is the mystique of the Olympiad, which brings together chess plazers around the world every two years. These players or their countries may not win medals, but to forge lifelong acquaintances. These are the players who love chess as deeply as the strongest grandmasters in the world, and for whom the Olympiad is the event to watch out for.

Stars like Ruslan Ponomariov and Judit Polgar are literally an elbow away, and to see them in action in this 14-round event is an unforgettable moment for chess players.
